Organisation > Who are we?

The Institut des Amériques is a network for higher education and research in the humanities and social sciences on the Americas

The Institut des Amériques (IdA) is a scientific interest grouping (GIS) set up in 2007 and currently supported by the CNRS, the Université Sorbonne nouvelle-Paris 3 and the Campus Condorcet. It federates studies in the humanities and social sciences (SHS) on the societies of the Americas in France. It promotes intellectual exchange at national, European and global levels on the major research issues affecting the Americas. More than twenty disciplines are involved. The IdA also works in synergy with the 3 other GIS études aréales (Études africaines, Asie, Moyen-Orient and Mondes musulmans).

A dynamic network

61 institutions, 250 research units, over 1,000 researchers

Our network is made up of some sixty French higher education and research establishments, representing more than 1,000 researchers and 250 research units.

The Institute promotes different scientific approaches from a comparative, trans-American and transdisciplinary perspective, thereby contributing to the emergence of new issues and the affirmation of French excellence in research and higher education.

Our 4 objectives

  • To support university research, particularly young research, through a range of funding instruments that enable us to support fieldwork, scientific events and all other activities of the network's members.
  • To decompartmentalise French research in the humanities and social sciences on the Americas, with a view to inter-disciplinarity, trans-Americanism (North America, Latin America and the Caribbean), inter-generationality and dialogue between institutions.
  • To give visibility to research work at national and international level.
  • To make this research accessible to non-academic audiences.

The Institute at the heart of Campus Condorcet

The aim of the Campus Condorcet is to provide the humanities and social sciences with a research and research training infrastructure, including the facilities necessary for the success of both students and researchers. The IdA moved into the South Research building in August 2019.
