Created in 2007, the Institut des Amériques (IdA) is a scientific interest group (GIS) supported by the CNRS, Sorbonne Nouvelle University-Paris 3, and Campus Condorcet. It federates research in the humanities and social sciences (HSS) in France on the societies of the Americas and promotes intellectual exchange at the national, european, and international levels on contemporary issues related to the Americas. This network includes about 60 institutions and more than 1,000 researchers specializing in American studies. Furthermore, the IdA supports the emergence of new issues while strengthening the excellence of research and higher education in France. Internationally, the IdA is also distinguished by its 12 hubs in the Americas, fostering exchanges and cooperation.
The IdA is actively involved in organizing and supporting scientific events aimed at promoting research on the Americas. Conferences, seminars, documentaries, and publications are just a few of the initiatives put in place to reinforce this commitment. Our biennial congress is no exception and is an essential meeting point to take stock of the state of Americanist research, both in Europe and internationally. This year, the congress will bring together over 100 researchers, with a program that includes 3 plenary conferences, 14 round tables, 12 workshops, and 2 exhibitions.
With the aim of fostering interdisciplinary approaches, the Institute of the Americas (IdA) congress gathers specialists on the United States, Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean every two years. In 2023, the congress took place in June in Lyon, specifically at the University Lumière Lyon 2 and the University Jean Moulin Lyon 3. In 2025,the Campus Condorcet in Aubervilliers will host this scientific event from October 1 to 3. The aim is to cover diverse topics and promote the widest possible dialogue in American studies.
Beyond these international scientific meetings, several cultural highlights are also planned: two exhibitions and a concert. The first exhibition, titled Warmikuna ("women" in Quechua), will be presented at the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme Paris Nord. The second will focus on scientific research in Brazil and will be displayed at the Centre des Colloques. Lastly, and in line with the France-Brazil Season 2025, a concert by two Brazilian groups will be offered to the congress participants, and it will also be open to the general public at the Fort d'Aubervilliers, as part of our partnership with Villes des Musiques du Monde.
Participation in the congress is free, as are the exhibitions. The concert will require a ticket, the price of which will be donated to Villes des Musiques du Monde.
